Dr. Dirk Helm is the head of the Business Unit Manufacturing Processes at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials.
He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Kassel and received his PhD in 2001. With more than 25 years of experience, he is a specialist in continuum mechanics, material modelling, and experimental characterization of materials.
His research focusses on the thermodynamic representation of materials and on multi-scale modelling to predict process-structure-property linkages for manufacturing processes and complex process chains.
In addition to his research on physical models, he investigates and applies machine learning for parameter identification as well as material and process design. In recent years, his research has been extended to the field of digital transformation in material science by using semantic technologies.
